The main assumption of technical analysis is history repeating itself, such that markets move in a fairly predictable way with quantifiable patterns and cycles. These patterns, generated by price and volume movements, are called signals. The goal here is to predict the market's future direction by examining historical market signals.

The other theory is stock prices move in trends. Technical Analysts believe that price fluctuations are NOT random and are predictable to a certain level of accuracy.  Prices can move in one of three directions - up, down or sideways. Once the price is trending in a particular direction, it will usually continue to trend in that direction.
